The Power of EP²

The 4 P’s build strategy, but they miss the most important one: people and their desires.

Beyond the 4 P’s: The Power of EP²

The 4 P’s of marketing — Product, Price, Place, and Promotion — have always been the foundation of strategy. They give structure to strategy, but they focus on the company. What they miss is the most important P: people and their desires.

What is EP²?

EP² stands for Experience, Engagement, Passion, and Personalization. Each element is a lens to reframe your marketing in a way that puts people at the center.

Experience

Think about Apple. People don’t line up around the block just for a phone. They line up for the experience of belonging to a movement that feels sleek, innovative, and aspirational. That is the difference. Every product or service should come wrapped in an experience. Today’s customers don’t just buy, they seek belonging, meaning, and transformation.

Engagement

When Duolingo leaned into humor with its green owl mascot, it wasn’t just pushing an app. It was pulling people into the story. Engagement is about sparking curiosity, creating an emotional pull, and inviting people to lean in. Whether it’s content that resonates, ads that entertain, or a story they see themselves in, engagement is the bridge from awareness to action.

Passion

Passion is your chance to show heart. Patagonia doesn’t just sell jackets. It speaks to its audience’s values, showing them the brand truly cares about the planet. That is passion in practice. It is not just about features or benefits. It is about proving that you care deeply about solving their needs and aligning with what matters most to them.

Personalization

Not every customer is at the same stage of the journey. Someone who is struggling to sleep at night (unaware of solutions) does not need the same message as someone who already knows your product exists. Personalization means meeting them where they are:

  • Unaware: people experiencing symptoms but not naming the problem

  • Problem aware: they know what’s wrong but not how to fix it

  • Solution aware: they are exploring ways forward

  • Product aware: they know you exist, but they are weighing options

  • Most aware: they are ready to buy, they just need a nudge

By personalizing your message to each stage, you turn generic communication into a direct conversation.

Why EP² Matters Now

In a crowded marketplace, the 4 P’s help you structure your offer. EP² ensures your brand resonates in the moments that matter. It is the difference between being another option on the shelf and being the brand that feels like it was made for them.

The companies that win today are the ones who understand that marketing is no longer just about the company’s perspective. It is about building trust, sparking emotion, and connecting deeply with people.

That’s the power of EP².

And that is where the Brand Practice comes in. Whether you need a coach to guide you through the framework or a partner to help bring it to life, I’ll work alongside you to design strategies and stories that put people at the center, where they belong.
